Ericeira: Europe's surfing reserve
Ericeira packs world-class reef and point breaks into a short stretch of coast north of Lisbon. Here's what each wave suits, so you surf the right one and keep the locals happy.
Why it's special
Ericeira was declared a World Surfing Reserve on 14 October 2011 by the Save The Waves Coalition. According to the reserve, it was the second in the world and is still the only one in Europe. The reserve sits in the municipality of Mafra, between the beaches of Empa and São Lourenço. It holds seven named waves in about four kilometres: Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço.

Etiquette on the reefs
- The reefs are rock in shallow water and there is a real pecking order. Watch first, and wait your turn.
- Not sure? Book a guided session with a local school instead of paddling out at Coxos.
- Booties help on urchin-covered reef.
Getting there
Ericeira is about 50 minutes by car from Lisbon, or you can take the bus from Campo Grande. Staying a few days? Compare it with the Lisbon beaches for flat days.
