Huntington Beach surf: read the pier
Surf City has about 10 miles of coast and very different waves along it. This guide covers where to paddle out for your level and the city rules that will get you whistled in if you don't know them.
Where to surf, by level
Huntington Beach Pier (north & south side)
Main St & Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington Beach, CA 92648
These are beach breaks on both sides of the pier. Visit Huntington Beach calls the pier zone the spot for "seasoned surfers", with bigger, more powerful waves on a swell. Expect a packed lineup. Keep well clear of the pilings and watch for rip currents, which form near piers. The US Open of Surfing runs here every summer.
Bolsa Chica State Beach
The visitor bureau points beginners here for smaller, consistent waves over a soft sandy bottom. It's the classic first-paddle-out choice in HB.
17th Street, the Cliffs (Goldenwest St & PCH) and the Santa Ana River Jetty
Visit Huntington Beach lists these with the pier as the city's main surf spots. They're spread along the coast, which helps when the pier is too crowded.
Rules that actually matter
- Blackball flag: a yellow flag with a black circle. The city's beach rules say board surfing is prohibited when blackball signs are posted, so check the towers before you paddle out.
- Curfews: the city beach curfew is 10 p.m. and the pier curfew is midnight.
- No bikes or skateboards on the pier, and no smoking on the beach or pier.
- Dogs are allowed on a leash only on the service road and at Dog Beach.
- Stingrays: shuffle your feet when you walk in, especially in summer.
Culture stop: International Surfing Museum
The Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum keeps vintage boards and surf history. Its featured exhibition marks 50 years of pro surfing. Its site lists 525 Main Street as its new home and phone 714-960-3483. Check opening hours there. Surfing history here goes back a long way: the visitor bureau credits George Freeth with surfing demonstrations at the pier in 1914.
Plan the session
- Check a forecast and the pier cam before you drive. Visit Huntington Beach points to Surfline.
- If you're new, book a lesson or rent from a beach concession instead of joining the pier crowd.
- Dawn patrol beats the summer blackball hours and the crowds.
