Surf Lisbon: train to the waves

You can't surf in central Lisbon, but you can be in the water within half an hour. Here's how the city's surf beaches compare, so you pick the right one for the day's wind and your level.

Carcavelos

It's the closest, about 20 minutes on the Cascais train line from Cais do Sodré. It's a wide, sandy, forgiving beach break in front of a historic fort, and among the busiest learner beaches in Portugal. Guides rate it best at low to mid tide with a west swell and a north (offshore) wind. Water quality can dip for a day or two after heavy rain.

Costa da Caparica

It's across the 25 de Abril bridge, 30–40 minutes by car or bus, and has kilometres of beach breaks, so you can walk away from crowds. The northern beaches are easiest, and the southern ones catch more swell. It's the sheltered pick when the summer nortada (north wind) blows out the coast.

intermediate+

Praia Grande (Sintra coast)

About 40 minutes by car. It's a committing beach break with a powerful reef at the north end, colder and more exposed than the city beaches.

experienced

Guincho

It's past Cascais under the Sintra hills: a beautiful dune beach facing the open Atlantic, with strong currents and wind. It's best in autumn and winter when clean. In summer the nortada makes it a kite and windsurf spot and hard work for surfers. It's not a beginner beach.
