Tokyo skateparks: skate legal, skate often
Tokyo is strict about street skating, so the scene lives in parks. These three are the easiest for visitors to reach, with details from the parks' own pages.
Skating outside designated areas is banned in many parks, and central wards like Shibuya enforce it. Every park below says to skate only inside the skate area.
Miyashita Park skate area (渋谷区立宮下公園 スケート場)
Park center: 1-26-5 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0002
This is a 480 m² outdoor skate area with lights, for skateboards and inline skates, on the park level above the shops. Per the official page, it runs 9:00–22:00 (last check-in 21:30) in 2-hour sessions. It costs ¥500 per 2 hours for Shibuya residents, workers and students, and double for everyone else. Helmets are mandatory and lent free; pads and boards rent for ¥500 each. It closes in rain or when wet, wax and portable ramps aren't allowed, and kids of elementary-school age and under need an adult (20+). Sign up at the park center first.
Komazawa Olympic Park Street Sports Plaza (駒沢オリンピック公園 ストリートスポーツ広場)
This is a public plaza in the 1964 Olympic park. The park's facility page lists it as open from 10:00 to sunset, with closing time shifting between 16:30 and 19:00 by season. It's for skateboards, BMX and inline. Lower-elementary kids need a companion. The gate may stay locked when it's crowded or stormy, or when the ramps are wet. Loud music and graffiti are banned, and so is skating anywhere else in the park.
livedoor URBAN SPORTS PARK (Ariake Urban Sports Park)
This is the Tokyo 2020 skateboarding area in Ariake, reopened as a paid urban sports park. Its official site lists street, park/bowl and flat areas, with separate visitor rates for weekdays and weekends. Check the official site for current fees, hours and any booking requirement before you go. It's the place in Tokyo to skate a contest-grade course.
Tips for visiting skaters
- Bring ID if you might qualify for resident rates. Business cards don't count at Miyashita.
- Rain means closed at outdoor parks, so have an indoor backup.
- Keep it quiet around residential areas. Noise complaints are what shut spots down in Tokyo.
- For footwear for long city days plus sessions, see skate shoes that last.
