Your first punk show: no gatekeeping
Nobody's checking your band knowledge at the door. Here's the practical stuff that makes a first show fun instead of overwhelming.
Before you go
- Check the age policy on the exact listing. Plenty of punk rooms are 21+. See all-ages options in Long Beach.
- Buy the ticket early if it's a small room, and bring cash for merch and door sales.
- Check the set times. Openers are often the best part, and they need the crowd most.
What to wear
- Closed shoes you don't care about: boots, skate shoes, beaters. Toes get stepped on.
- Clothes that can get sweaty and beer-splashed. A thrifted tee or a patched jacket is perfect.
- Skip dangly earrings, big hoops and anything you'd cry about losing.
What to bring
- Earplugs. Small rooms are loud, and hearing damage is permanent. Musician-style plugs keep the sound clear.
- ID, a phone with some charge, and a plan for getting home.
- Small bills for merch. Buying a shirt or record straight from the band is the best way to support them.
The pit, explained
- You never have to go in. The sides and back are where most people watch.
- If someone falls, pick them up. That's the universal rule.
- Keep elbows and fists down. Moshing is about energy, not hurting people.
- Crowd-surfers come over the top. Hold them up and pass them along.
- If something feels wrong, tell staff or the band. Most DIY spaces take safety seriously.
After
Follow the openers, grab a flyer for the next show, and say thanks to whoever booked it. That's how a scene keeps going.
