Skateboard size guide: pick your width
Deck width affects how flip tricks feel and how stable you are in a bowl. Use your shoe size as the starting point and your style to fine-tune.
Start with shoe size
This chart is compiled from the size guides published by skate retailers (linked below). Treat it as a starting range.
| US men's shoe | US women's shoe | Deck width |
|---|---|---|
| 7–8.5 | 8.5–10 | 8.0″–8.25″ |
| 9–10 | 10.5–12 | 8.25″–8.5″ |
| 11+ | n/a | 8.5″ and up |
Then adjust for how you skate
| Style | Width tendency | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Technical street / flip tricks | 8.0″–8.25″ | Lighter, so it flips faster |
| All-round park | 8.25″–8.5″ | A balance of flick and stability |
| Transition, bowl, vert, cruising | 8.5″+ | More platform and stability at speed |
Quick checks
- Foot coverage: when you stand on it, toes and heels should just slightly overhang the edges.
- Trucks: match the axle width to the deck width so the wheels sit roughly flush with the edges.
- Wheels: smaller, harder wheels suit street and smooth parks. Bigger, softer wheels roll over rough ground and suit cruising.
- Kids: smaller riders usually go narrower and shorter. Check a retailer's youth chart.
Then grab shoes that grip: skate shoe guide. Ready to roll? Find a park in San Diego, LA or Tokyo.
